Description
Dimethyl Sulfoxide 99.9% (DMSO)
We are a bulk DMSO supplier of dimethyl sulfoxide 99.9%. Dimethyl Sulfoxide 99.9% (DMSO) (CAS 67-68-5, molecular formula C2H6OS) is a process chemical for electronics and metal finishing, where trace metal content and particle contamination matter as much as headline assay. China Chemicals supplies it at 99.9% min in pack sizes from 1 L through to 200 L Drum, so laboratory trial quantities and full production volumes can be sourced from the same specification.
It is also traded as DMSO, Methylsulfinylmethane, Sulfinylbismethane. Every consignment ships with a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis and the current Safety Data Sheet, and material is stored and picked under stock rotation so you receive product well inside its shelf life.
Typical applications
- Photoresist and polyimide stripping
- Reaction solvent in fine chemical synthesis
- Spinning solvent for acrylic and polysulphone fibre
- Cryoprotectant in cell preservation at pharma grade
- Paint stripper component in low-VOC systems

What Is Dimethyl Sulfoxide?
Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO, C2H6OS) is a sulfur-containing organic solvent: a clear, colourless, nearly odourless liquid with very high polarity and a high boiling point of about 189°C. It mixes freely with water and with most common organic solvents, and it dissolves many organic and inorganic compounds that other solvents cannot. That combination is why dimethyl sulfoxide is a workhorse in electronics cleaning, polymer processing and chemical synthesis. This 99.9% grade is specified with a maximum of 0.05% water.
Three Properties That Shape How You Use It
First, dimethyl sulfoxide freezes at about 18.4°C, so on a cool day it can set solid in the drum. This is normal and reversible: warm it gently and mix before use. Second, it is hygroscopic and steadily pulls moisture from the air, so a drum left open will drift away from its water specification. Third, and most important for safety, dimethyl sulfoxide penetrates skin very easily and can carry other dissolved chemicals into the body with it.
Applications
In microelectronics, dimethyl sulfoxide is used as a photoresist stripper and for removing copper post-etch residues, often in blends with glycol ethers or with N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone; for a related semiconductor solvent see PGMEA. It is a reaction solvent for active pharmaceutical ingredients and intermediates, where its polarity can improve yields. It is used as a processing and spinning solvent for acrylonitrile polymers, carbon fibre and certain high-performance polymers, and for cleaning polyurethane and polyester residue from manufacturing equipment.
Biology laboratories also use dimethyl sulfoxide as a cryoprotectant when freezing cells, though that application calls for a grade intended for it.
Handling & Safety
Because dimethyl sulfoxide carries dissolved substances through skin, never let it touch skin when it contains anything hazardous, and choose glove materials that the glove manufacturer rates for it, since thin disposable gloves can be unsuitable. It forms flammable vapour above its flash point of roughly 87–88°C, and it can decompose violently if heated to its boiling point at normal pressure, so do not distil it carelessly.
Keep dimethyl sulfoxide away from acid chlorides, phosphorus halides, strong acids and strong oxidising or reducing agents, and store it in a tightly sealed container to limit moisture uptake. This is an industrial solvent grade; if you need a pharmaceutical or cell-culture grade, tell us before ordering.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why has my dimethyl sulfoxide turned solid?
It freezes at about 18.4°C, so it can solidify in a cool store. Warm it gently and mix thoroughly before use.
Is dimethyl sulfoxide safe to handle?
It has relatively low toxicity itself, but it penetrates skin and can carry other dissolved chemicals through it, so use suitable gloves and protective equipment and avoid skin contact.
Why does water content matter?
Dimethyl sulfoxide is hygroscopic. Absorbed water changes its performance in electronics cleaning and synthesis, so keep containers tightly closed.
What is dimethyl sulfoxide used for in electronics?
It is used to strip photoresist and to remove copper post-etch residues, often as part of a blended stripper formulation.
What packaging and order quantities are available?
