Description
Xylene Mixed Isomers 98.5%
Xylene Mixed Isomers 98.5% (CAS 1330-20-7, molecular formula C8H10) is a workhorse solvent across coatings, cleaning and process manufacture, valued for its predictable evaporation behaviour and consistent purity from batch to batch. China Chemicals supplies it at 98.5% min in pack sizes from 1 L through to 200 L Drum, so laboratory trial quantities and full production volumes can be sourced from the same specification.
It is also traded as Xylol, Dimethylbenzene, Mixed Xylenes. Every consignment ships with a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis and the current Safety Data Sheet, and material is stored and picked under stock rotation so you receive product well inside its shelf life.
Typical applications
- Slow-evaporating thinner for alkyd and epoxy coatings
- Cleaning agent in steel and equipment maintenance
- Histology clearing agent in laboratory processing
- Feedstock for phthalic anhydride and terephthalic acid
- Agrochemical and pesticide formulation carrier

What Is Xylene (Mixed Isomers)?
Xylene mixed isomers (xylol, dimethylbenzene) is a clear, colourless aromatic solvent with the formula C8H10 and a sweet, solvent-like odour. Commercial mixed xylene is a blend of the three isomers (ortho-, meta- and para-xylene) together with some ethylbenzene, which is why it has a boiling range (about 137-143°C) rather than a single boiling point. It is a slower-evaporating aromatic solvent than toluene, with strong solvency for resins, and is practically insoluble in water but miscible with most organic solvents. This grade is supplied at 98.5% minimum purity.
Applications
Xylene mixed isomers is widely used as a solvent and thinner in paints, coatings, varnishes and printing inks, where its slower evaporation improves flow, levelling and gloss, especially in brushing and baking enamels. It is a common clean-up solvent for these systems.
It is also used as a solvent in the rubber and leather industries, in adhesives, in agricultural formulations, and as a cleaning and degreasing agent. In laboratories it is used as a clearing agent in histology. As a faster-drying partner it is often blended with Toluene, and with oxygenated solvents such as N-Butanol to adjust the coating solvent balance.
Handling & Storage
Xylene is a flammable liquid with a flash point around 25-30°C, so keep it away from heat, sparks and open flame, bond and ground containers during transfer, and use good ventilation. It is harmful if inhaled or swallowed, irritates the eyes, skin and respiratory tract, and prolonged exposure can affect the nervous system, so use gloves, eye protection and adequate ventilation, and avoid breathing vapour. Store xylene in a cool, well-ventilated place in tightly closed containers away from strong oxidisers and ignition sources, and follow the current Safety Data Sheet.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is xylene used for?
Chiefly as a solvent and thinner in paints, coatings, varnishes and inks, plus rubber, leather, adhesives, agricultural formulations, cleaning and laboratory clearing.
Why does xylene have a boiling range instead of a boiling point?
Commercial mixed xylene is a blend of three isomers plus ethylbenzene, each with a slightly different boiling point, so the product boils over a range (about 137-143°C).
Is xylene mixed isomers flammable?
Yes. Xylene mixed isomers is a flammable liquid with a flash point around 25-30°C, so keep it away from ignition sources and use it with good ventilation.
How does xylene mixed isomers differ from toluene?
Xylene evaporates more slowly than toluene and has a higher boiling range, so it is chosen where a slower, higher-boiling aromatic solvent improves flow and finish.
What packaging and order quantities are available?
We supply xylene mixed isomers from trial quantities through to full bulk orders. Contact us with your required volume for current pricing and lead time.
