What Is Phosphoric Acid 85% Food Grade?
Phosphoric acid (H3PO4, orthophosphoric acid) is a clear, colourless, syrupy liquid supplied here at 85% concentration to a food grade. It is a medium-strength mineral acid, miscible with water, with a mild, pleasant tartness that is the reason it is used as an acidulant in food and drink.

Applications
In food and beverage, phosphoric acid is the characteristic acidulant in cola soft drinks, and it is used more widely to adjust acidity, add tartness and act as a preservative in various foods. It is also used to make phosphate salts used as food additives.
Outside food, phosphoric acid is used in metal treatment, particularly rust conversion and phosphating of steel before painting, in agriculture as a feed and fertiliser ingredient, in water treatment, in the manufacture of detergents and cleaning products, and as a dental and laboratory reagent. For general industrial acidulation where food grade is not required, a technical-grade acid such as Sulphuric Acid may be more economical.
Handling & Safety
Phosphoric acid 85% is corrosive. It causes serious eye damage and skin and respiratory irritation or burns on contact, so wear goggles or a face shield, acid-resistant gloves and protective clothing, and have eyewash available. It is less aggressive and not an oxidiser like nitric acid, but it is still a concentrated acid that must be handled with care.
When diluting, add the acid to water, not water to acid, and control the heat released. It can react with metals to release flammable hydrogen over time, so use compatible, corrosion-resistant containers and store phosphoric acid in a cool place away from strong bases and incompatible materials.
