Description
Organophilic Bentonite Rheology Additive
We are a bulk bentonite supplier of organophilic bentonite rheology additive. Organophilic Bentonite Rheology Additive (CAS 1302-78-9, molecular formula Bentonite) is a coatings raw material used by paint, ink and adhesive formulators who need consistent dispersion, opacity and rheology from drum to drum. China Chemicals supplies it at Montmorillonite 90% min in pack sizes from 1 kg through to 500 kg Pallet, so laboratory trial quantities and full production volumes can be sourced from the same specification.
It is also traded as Organoclay, Bentonite Clay, Montmorillonite. Every consignment ships with a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis and the current Safety Data Sheet, and material is stored and picked under stock rotation so you receive product well inside its shelf life.
Typical applications
- Anti-settling and anti-sag additive in solvent-borne paint
- Thixotrope in adhesives, sealants and greases
- Suspension aid in drilling mud and grouting
- Rheology control in printing ink
- Binder in foundry moulding sand

Read the Safety Data Sheet in full before use — it is issued with every order and is available on request before purchase.
Supply to industry only. Products are sold for legitimate industrial, laboratory and manufacturing use. We may request end-use details and business registration before releasing an order.
What Is Organophilic Bentonite?
Bentonite is a naturally occurring clay that readily absorbs water and swells — great for water-based applications, but useless on its own in solvent systems. Organophilic bentonite rheology additive solves that: the clay’s natural sodium or calcium ions are exchanged for a quaternary ammonium compound, flipping its surface chemistry so it swells and gels organic solvents rather than water.
How It Works: Activation and Dispersion
The clay platelets arrive in a stacked, closely associated state and need to be properly delaminated to build viscosity effectively. Many conventional grades need a polar activator — commonly methanol, ethanol or propylene carbonate, typically 30–50% by weight of the organoclay dosage — added during dispersion alongside solvents such as Butyl Glycol to fully separate the platelets and develop viscosity.
Handling & Safety
This organophilic bentonite rheology additive is generally classified as a low-hazard material. As with any fine mineral powder, avoid prolonged inhalation of dust and use standard handling precautions (dust mask for bulk handling, eye protection). If using a polar activator such as methanol alongside it, handle and store that component according to its own separate safety data sheet.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does an organophilic bentonite rheology additive do in paint?
It builds a thixotropic structure: thick at rest to prevent pigment settling and sagging on vertical surfaces, but thin and flowable under the shear of brushing, rolling or spraying.
Does an organophilic bentonite rheology additive need a polar activator?
Many conventional grades do, typically methanol, ethanol or propylene carbonate dosed at roughly 30–50% of the organoclay weight, to fully delaminate the clay platelets and develop viscosity.
What solvent systems is this organophilic bentonite rheology additive compatible with?
Most grades work across low-to-medium polarity aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbon solvents; compatibility should be confirmed for your specific solvent blend, often alongside cellulosic thickeners such as Hydroxyethyl Cellulose in water-reducible systems.
Is organophilic bentonite rheology additive hazardous to handle?
The base clay is generally considered low-hazard. Standard dust precautions apply as with any fine mineral powder.
What packaging and order quantities are available?
We supply this organophilic bentonite rheology additive from trial quantities for formulation testing through to full bulk orders. Contact us with your required volume for current pricing and lead time.
