Description

Copper Sulphate Pentahydrate 99% Plating Grade

We are a bulk copper sulphate supplier of pentahydrate 99% plating grade. Copper Sulphate Pentahydrate 99% Plating Grade (CAS 7758-99-8, molecular formula CuSO4·5H2O) is a process chemical for electronics and metal finishing, where trace metal content and particle contamination matter as much as headline assay. China Chemicals supplies it at 99% min in pack sizes from 1 kg through to 500 kg Pallet, so laboratory trial quantities and full production volumes can be sourced from the same specification.

It is also traded as Blue Vitriol, Bluestone, Cupric Sulphate. Every consignment ships with a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis and the current Safety Data Sheet, and material is stored and picked under stock rotation so you receive product well inside its shelf life.

Typical applications

  • Acid copper electroplating and PCB through-hole plating
  • Electroless copper and printed circuit metallisation
  • Flotation reagent in zinc and lead mineral processing
  • Algaecide in reservoirs and irrigation systems
  • Fungicide component in Bordeaux mixture

What Is Copper Sulphate Pentahydrate?

Copper sulphate pentahydrate (CuSO4·5H2O), also called blue vitriol or bluestone, is the bright blue crystalline salt that supplies copper ions in acid copper plating. This plating grade is supplied as 2–5 mm blue crystals with a minimum assay of 99.0% and at least 25.2% copper. Impurities are tightly limited: iron at 0.003% maximum, chloride at 0.005% maximum and water insolubles at 0.02% maximum.

Why Impurity Limits Matter in Acid Copper Baths

An acid copper plating bath is mainly copper sulphate dissolved in sulphuric acid, with a small, carefully controlled amount of chloride and organic additives that control brightness and levelling. Because chloride is a variable the plating line manages deliberately, a raw material with low, known chloride keeps the bath in control from the start. Insoluble matter and metallic impurities such as iron can leave rough or dull deposits, so a plating grade limits them.

Applications

Copper sulphate pentahydrate is the copper source for acid copper plating used in decorative and engineering finishing, electroforming and printed circuit board manufacture. It is often part of a finishing line with other metal salts such as Nickel Sulphate and Stannous Chloride, which is used in tin and copper-tin plating.

Outside electronics, copper sulphate pentahydrate is used as an agricultural fungicide and micronutrient, in algae control, and as a laboratory reagent. For those uses, confirm the grade and any regulatory approval you need with us before ordering.

Handling and Environmental Hazards

Copper sulphate pentahydrate causes serious eye damage, is harmful if swallowed, and is very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects. It is not flammable. Wear safety goggles or a face shield, gloves and protective clothing, avoid creating dust, and wash thoroughly after handling. Do not eat, drink or smoke while using it.

Keep copper sulphate pentahydrate and copper-bearing solutions out of drains and waterways, and dispose of waste according to local rules. Store the crystals in a dry, tightly closed container away from incompatible materials, and follow the current safety data sheet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is copper sulphate pentahydrate used for in plating?
It supplies the copper ions in acid copper plating baths, which also contain sulphuric acid and small amounts of chloride and organic additives.

Why is chloride limited in a plating grade?
Chloride is a controlled variable in acid copper baths. Starting with a low, known chloride level makes the bath easier to keep in balance.

Is copper sulphate pentahydrate hazardous?
Yes. It causes serious eye damage, is harmful if swallowed, and is very toxic to aquatic life. Use eye protection and gloves, and never let it reach drains.

What is the difference between the pentahydrate and anhydrous copper sulphate?
The pentahydrate contains five molecules of water in each crystal and is the blue form. Anhydrous copper sulphate is a white powder that has lost that water.

What packaging and order quantities are available?
We supply copper sulphate pentahydrate from trial quantities through to full bulk orders. Contact us with your required volume for current pricing and lead time.
