What are caustic soda flakes used for?

How do I dissolve caustic soda flakes safely?
Always add the flakes slowly to water while stirring, never water to the flakes, and control the temperature. Dissolving releases a lot of heat and can make the solution boil and spatter if done too quickly.
Are caustic soda flakes dangerous?
Yes. Sodium hydroxide is severely corrosive and causes severe burns to skin and eyes, with permanent injury possible. Full PPE and eyewash and safety-shower access are essential, and it must be kept away from acids, with which it reacts violently.
Why do the flakes clump or get damp in storage?
Caustic soda is hygroscopic and absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide from the air, which causes caking and loss of strength. Keep containers tightly closed in a dry place.
How does caustic soda compare to caustic potash?
Both are strong alkalis; sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) is the most widely used and lowest cost, while Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) is chosen for certain soaps and specialist uses.
