Description
Calcined Alumina 99.5% Ceramic Grade
We are a bulk alumina supplier of calcined alumina 99.5% ceramic grade. Calcined Alumina 99.5% Ceramic Grade (CAS 1344-28-1, molecular formula Al2O3) is a raw material for tile, sanitaryware, tableware and refractory production, where particle size and impurity profile drive fired colour and body strength. China Chemicals supplies it at 99.5% min in pack sizes from 1 kg through to 1000 kg Bulk Bag, so laboratory trial quantities and full production volumes can be sourced from the same specification.
It is also traded as Aluminium Oxide, Corundum, Alpha Alumina. Every consignment ships with a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis and the current Safety Data Sheet, and material is stored and picked under stock rotation so you receive product well inside its shelf life.
Typical applications
- Technical and electrical ceramic manufacture
- Refractory brick and monolithic castable production
- Grinding media and wear-resistant liners
- Spark plug and substrate manufacture
- Polishing compound and abrasive production

What Is Calcined Alumina 99.5%?
Calcined alumina is produced by thermally decomposing aluminium hydroxide (derived from bauxite via the Bayer process) at temperatures between 1000 and 1500°C, driving off bound water and converting it to crystalline aluminium oxide (Al2O3). At 99.5% purity — the “technical alumina” grade — it sits above standard metallurgical grade (around 98.5%), with low soda (Na2O) content that matters specifically for electronic and high-performance ceramic applications. It is exceptionally hard (Mohs 9, second only to diamond), has a melting point above 2000°C, and is an excellent electrical insulator, with resistivity exceeding 10¹&sup4; Ω·cm.
Applications
Used as the primary raw material for electronic substrates, spark plugs, wear-resistant tiles, grinding media, cutting tools and high-alumina refractory bricks in steelmaking furnaces, cement kilns and glass tanks. Its extreme hardness also makes it a core raw material in bonded and coated abrasives, often specified alongside Silicon Carbide in grinding wheel formulations, and in fine ceramic bodies requiring high mechanical strength and chemical resistance.
Handling & Safety
Calcined alumina is chemically inert and stable. As a fine, very hard powder, standard precautions apply: avoid generating and inhaling dust, use eye protection, and be aware it is genuinely abrasive to skin on prolonged contact.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is calcined alumina used for?
Electronic substrates, spark plugs, wear-resistant tiles, grinding media, cutting tools, high-alumina refractory bricks, and as a key raw material in bonded and coated abrasives.
How hard is calcined alumina?
Mohs 9, second only to diamond, with a melting point above 2000°C — making it both a premier abrasive and refractory material.
Why does low soda content matter for this grade?
Low Na2O content is specifically important for electronic and electrical insulation applications, where sodium impurities can affect dielectric performance.
What packaging and order quantities are available?
We supply from trial quantities for formulation testing through to full bulk orders. Contact us with your required volume for current pricing and lead time.
