Description
Isopropyl Alcohol 99.9% (IPA)
What Is Isopropyl Alcohol?
Isopropyl alcohol (IPA, isopropanol, 2-propanol) is a clear, colourless liquid with a characteristic alcoholic odour and the formula C3H8O. It is fully miscible with water and most organic solvents, evaporates quickly and cleanly leaving little residue, and has useful disinfectant properties. This grade is supplied at 99.9% minimum purity with a maximum of 0.1% water, which makes it suitable for electronics cleaning and other applications where water content must be low.
Isopropyl Alcohol 99.9% (IPA) (CAS 67-63-0, molecular formula C3H8O) is a workhorse solvent across coatings, cleaning and process manufacture, valued for its predictable evaporation behaviour and consistent purity from batch to batch. China Chemicals supplies it at 99.9% min in pack sizes from 1 L through to 200 L Drum, so laboratory trial quantities and full production volumes can be sourced from the same specification.
It is also traded as IPA, Isopropanol, 2-Propanol, Rubbing Alcohol. Every consignment ships with a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis and the current Safety Data Sheet, and material is stored and picked under stock rotation so you receive product well inside its shelf life.
Typical applications
- Electronics and PCB cleaning where residue-free drying is required
- Disinfectant and antiseptic formulation base
- Carrier solvent in inks, coatings and cosmetics
- Dehydration and extraction steps in laboratory workflows
- Fuel line antifreeze and moisture displacement

Frequently Asked Questions
What is isopropyl alcohol used for?
As a fast-drying cleaning and disinfecting solvent, an electronics and optics cleaner, a solvent in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, and a dehydrating and extraction solvent in industry.
Why is 99.9% IPA used for electronics?
Its very low water content means it cleans circuit boards, contacts and optics and evaporates quickly without leaving residue or causing corrosion.
Is isopropyl alcohol flammable?
Yes, highly flammable, with a flash point around 12°C. Keep it away from ignition sources and use it with good ventilation.
Is isopropyl alcohol the same as rubbing alcohol?
Rubbing alcohol is usually a diluted IPA solution (often around 70%). This is high-purity 99.9% IPA, which is stronger and lower in water than typical rubbing alcohol.
How does IPA compare to ethanol for cleaning?
Both are effective; IPA leaves less residue and is not subject to the same beverage-alcohol duties, while Denatured Ethanol and Methanol are alternatives for other solvent and fuel uses.
Documentation
A Certificate of Analysis is issued for every batch, and the current Safety Data Sheet is provided on request. You can also view the Isopropyl safety data sheet summary for a quick reference. Public summaries do not replace the supplier SDS and lot-specific COA applicable to your order and destination.
